Baran Efe Öztürk
Hatır
In the series captured with the Casio WQV-1 wristwatch without any alterations, Öztürk brings together moments when the watch’s camera undergoes distortion. In contrast to visual arts where perfection has become the norm, the artist delegates the choice to an apparatus that prefers malfunction. While questioning the relationship between time, memory, and machine through visual anomalies, the frames taken with a wearable device reveal that the body can be not only represented but also serve as a productive tool. By allowing the camera itself to make choices, the series interrogates the notion of will on a political plane, while its low resolution and rejection of artistic conventions present a critical and political counter-stance to the concept of “high art.”
